Earny Summary

Product: Earny

Price to join: Free!

Rating: 50/100

Do I recommend? No

Summary: Earny is an application which automatically gets customers refunds on purchases the moment the retailer drops the price. It is free to join, and the tool is actually pretty good and effective.

But users should be wary of letting the app access their emails and send messages on their behalf. This is the reason why we recommend that prospective users exercise prudence and common sense when using this tool.

What Is Earny?

Let's say you purchased a pair of sneakers from your favorite online store. The shoes fit like a dream, and they're light as air too. Several days later, you're browsing the internet and to your disappointment, you find that the price of the sneakers have dropped.

The developers of Earny know how it sucks to miss out on a great deal so they created the app and the website for consumers. When you sign up, Earny will automatically contact the retailer with the best price so you can get the difference between the original price and the discounted price.

So how does Earny know if you purchased something?

Easy. You'll need to sign up using your email and give the app access to it. Upon signing in and once you give the app access to your account, it will scour your inbox for receipts. It will then keep tabs of prices of the items you purchased online. When it finds the best price, the app will contact the retailer and ask for the price difference for you.

Earny is based in Santa Monica, California. The company was founded by current CEO Oded Varkat and current COO Dori Yona.

Is This Even Legal?

You love the money-back aspect of Earny, but is this service even legal? Plus, there's the issue of giving an app access to your email and credit card information.

Your worries about Earny's legality is justified, as well as the privacy issue that comes along with it.

For the record, Earny and its price protection service are perfectly legal. Some US stores have a price protection or price adjustment policies, and these stores include Abercrombie, Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Home Depot to name a few.

Keep in mind, however, that not all stores have a price adjustment policy. The stores also have a limited time frame when you can claim a price adjustment. Home Depot, for example, has a 14-day limit for price adjustments, while JC Penney will gladly refund the difference of the original price to the discounted price within 30 days.

Moreover, keep in mind that some stores will not honor the price adjustment when you purchase an item on sale or during Black Friday or Cyber Mondays.

Although it's services are perfectly legal, there's still the privacy issue.

Remember that Earny needs to access your email account, as well as access to your credit card information. Earny will send messages to the stores on your behalf and without your knowledge sometimes.

Of course, it's nice to get a few extra dollars credited back to you every now and then. But in the age of hacks and leaks, is the few extra pennies really worth your peace of mind?

How Does It Work?

If you want to use Earny, just follow these steps.

* Sign up using your email

Sign up and start getting those refunds with Earny by giving the app access to your email. The system will then check your email for receipts, as well as scan for stores which offer price adjustment.

* Link your credit card if you have an Amazon account

Unfortunately, Amazon does not have a price protection policy, so you'll have to rely on credit cards with price protection policy to get your refunds on purchased items. This is extremely helpful if you frequently shop at Amazon. You are immediately qualified for refunds under the price protection policy if you own a Mastercard, Visa, or Citibank card.

You don't have to link your credit cards to the Earny app if you shop at other stores as they already have a price protection policy in place. You can also use debit cards and Paypal for your purchase.

* Tell your friends about Earny

Earn a commission every time you tell your friends about Earny. All you have to do is click the "Invite" button when Earny presents a friend's name to you.

You can also go to the dashboard and click the "Friends" section and share Earny through email or social media.

In this referral program, you'll earn 5% of your friends' refunds, as well 5% of the refunds earned by your friends' referrals. Keep in mind that you'll need $10 worth of refund to cash it out. The corresponding amount will be sent to your PayPal account.

* Start getting those refunds

After signing in and giving Earny access to your email, it will scan your messages to find receipts and import the items to your dashboard.

You'll find a list of the items you purchased on the dashboard, as well as the date when you bought and its price. All items that are qualified for a refund will be analyzed by the system.

Earny divides items you have purchased into three: tracking, claiming, and refunded.

Purchased items that may be qualified for refund are monitored and falls under the label "tracking."

Once an item on your list has been marked down on the retailer's end, it will be marked "claiming."

Items that have already been approved will be labeled "refunded."

How Much To Join Earny?

The good news is you don't have to pay a fee to join Earny.

But keep in mind that this service is not free, and Earny will get 25% of the total refund processed on your behalf. This fee will be debited from the credit card you had linked in the system.

Ways to Receive Your Refund

Refunds will be returned to the debit card that you used to buy the item.

For Chase and Visa credit card holders, the refund will be refunded via check (if you allow Earny to process the claim for you).

But if you want to submit a claim on your own, the money will be sent to your debit card or via check which will be sent to you via mail. Keep in mind that you'll have to wait for 7 to 10 business days for the check to arrive.

Mastercard account holders will receive the refund in their corresponding accounts.

Citibank account holders, on the other hand, can receive their refund to the Citibank Price Rewind account or opt to have their refund sent via check in the mail.

What I Like About Earny

Earny is actually a pretty good tool to get refunds, and here are some things that I like about it.

* Monitors price drops on your behalf

Tracking every single purchase you make, as well as any price drops that might occur after you make your purchase, can be time-consuming. This the reason why Earny was created.

Just go to the Earny website or download the app, sign up, and let it do everything for you. From tracking any price drop to contacting the retailer to request for your refund, Earny does everything.

* Save money with refunds

If you're like most people, you probably shop on impulse, ordering anything that strikes your fancy. So it can be frustrating to learn that the retailer has dropped the price and you paid a great deal more for an item that you could have had for less.

Now you can save more money with Earny. All items you purchased within a 90-day period will be scanned by the system for refund eligibility. Although the developer will take 25% of the refund, you'll still save money through the app.

* Easy cashout

Earny allows you to cash out your accumulated refunds via check in the mail or credited back to your card. Some retailers, however, will convert the refund to store credit instead.

* Earny referral program

Earny users can get a commission every time they refer Earny to a friend and that particular friend signs up with Earny.

What I Don't Like About Earny

Earny is definitely a great tool, but of course, there are some things I don't like about it.

* You need to grant Earny access to your email and send messages on your behalf

The most pressing issue about Earny is privacy and security. The moment you grant Earny access to your email, the system can scan your messages and send messages on your behalf. But it doesn't stop there. Earny can also delete and manage your email. Creepy, right?

We frequently hear and read news about people hacking emails and stealing critical information such as personal data, financial information, and more. I think Earny is a great way to save money, but are you willing to risk your digital privacy to earn back a few dollars?

* Earny is entitled to 25% of the total amount refunded to you

As mentioned, Earny will get a 25% commission from the amount refunded to you. But if you're going to track the price drops and request refunds yourself, you get to pocket the total refund and skip Earny's 25% fee. But of course, that will take a lot of work on your end.

* Not all retail stores have a price protection/adjustment policy

Earny will only work if you frequently shop in retail stores mentioned above. If you're live in a different country or you're partial to other stores or your favorite store does not have a price adjustment policy, then Earny will not be a helpful tool for you.

Is Earny A Scam?

So, is Earny a scam?

The answer is no, Earny is not a scam. It is actually a great tool that you can use to refund the difference between the original price of the item you purchased and its marked down price.

Earny takes care of everything — from scouring your email for receipts for your purchases to processing refund claims with your favorite stores or credit card company. All you have to do is sign up and let Earny do the work.

Although it's not a scam, there are still some issues.

When you sign up with Earny, you'll have to give it access to your email and I'm not entirely sure everyone's comfortable with that. It sends messages to your retail stores or credit card companies on your behalf, and that can be dangerous especially in this age of security breaches and leaks.

Plus, Earny gets to keep 25% of the total amount refunded to you. If you really want to save money, why not track the price drops and request the claim yourself. Yes, it's time-consuming but you don't have to worry about anyone accessing your email, personal information, and financial data.
