What is GetUpside App and How Does It Work?

GetUpside is an app that can help you save money on gas, groceries, and restaurants. You can earn rebates every time you buy gasoline, purchase groceries, and dine out in GetUpside's partner establishments.

All you have to do is install the app, register, and take a photo of the receipt issued by the establishment. Upload the picture using the app, and wait for GetUpside to verify the transaction before you can earn the cashback. You can cash it out via check or PayPal. The cashback is usually credited to your account within 24 to 48 hours.

The cashback amount varies for different products. You can get up to 25¢ per gallon for gas, and you can get up to 50% rebate for car washes. You can get up to 40% cashback for car services, and up to 35% cashback for dining out in GetUpside partner establishments. You can also get as much as a 15% rebate when you buy groceries at certain supermarkets.

Keep in mind, however, that GetUpside is only available in certain cities in the United States. The app's partner establishments are also limited, so check the app first before you fuel up or when you dine out.

According to its website, GetUpside has partnered with more than 5,000 gas stations in D.C. Delaware, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, and Virginia. Keep in mind, also, that although there are partner establishments in these states, not all cities are covered.

Some of the cities where you can gas up and earn cashback include Long Island, Miami, Tampa, Annapolis, Charlottesville, Durham, Columbia, and Houston. The participating brands include Shell, Marathon, Sunoco, Exxon, BP, and more.

The cities and partner establishments for groceries and restaurants are even more limited. GetUpside partner restaurants are only available in Austin, Houston, and D.C. areas. Additionally, you can only shop in GetUpside partner supermarkets in the D.C. area.

Featured stores for groceries include Streets Market & Cafe and Moti's Market. At the time of writing, GetUpside has also partnered with and features restaurants such as Little Dipper Hot Pot, Angelico, and Botanero.

GetUpside headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.

Who Created The GetUpside App?

GetUpside was created and developed by Alex Kinnier and Wayne Lin. Both men have impressive resumes, and used to work for Google (Lin as associate product marketing manager, while Kinnier worked as a group product manager).

They also worked for Opower before it was acquired by Oracle. The duo founded GetUpside in 2015.

Lin currently serves as the chief operating officer of the company, while Kinnier serves as its chief executive officer.

How Much Does GetUpside App Cost?

The GetUpside app is available for free on the App Store and the Play Store. Simply install the app, register, and start earning rebates from your purchases.

What I Like About GetUpside App

Its referral program

The good news is GetUpside has a referral program. You can earn additional cash when you share the app with your friends. Simply share the promo code that can be found in your profile to people who are interested in earning cash backs from their purchases.

If one of your friends installs and uses the app, then you can get a $.20 discount the next time you fuel up. You will also get an additional $.02 off each time your friend purchases at least $10 of gas at that pump. Keep in mind, however, that this referral bonus is limited only to gas stations and has not been expanded to restaurants and groceries at the time of writing.

You can easily find affiliated businesses in the in-app map

You don't have to go through an extensive list just to see which establishments in your area are affiliated with GetUpside. Just open the app's map, turn on your location, and see which establishment is available in your area. This is especially helpful if you're on the road and looking for a gas pump, or you're with your family and you're looking for a restaurant where you can save money.

You don't need to link a bank account or credit card for transactions

You don't need to link your bank account or credit card so you can earn a cashback or cash out your earnings. The rebates you're going to earn will be sent through PayPal or via check in the mail anyway.

What I Don't Like About GetUpside App

It's not available in all cities in the U.S.

Although GetUpside has been in the business since 2016, it is still unavailable in a lot of U.S. cities. Partner gas stations, for example, are only available in Long Island in New York. It is only available in major cities in Florida, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. It only has partner restaurants in two major Texas cities and of course, the D.C. area. Plus, its partner groceries are only limited in the D.C. area.

Few partner establishments

There are only a few cities in the country where GetUpside operates. Its partner establishments are also lamentably few. So, even if you're located in Houston or D.C., you're probably only going to make a few cents here and there with this app. Too bad because it's a really good idea.

Credit or debit card transactions only

GetUpside is only available for credit or debit card owners because the transactions are easier to track compared to cash. So, if you don't have a credit or debit card, then GetUpside is probably not the money-saving app for you.

Is GetUpside App a Scam?

No, GetUpside is not a scam. It is a legit and well-established money-saving app that you can download from the App Store or the Play Store. GetUpside claims that app users can earn cash backs every time they shop, dine, or fuel up in its partner supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations.

You can indeed save some money when you use the GetUpside app -- if you don't mind saving a few cents, that is. It also has a referral program where you can earn additional cash, and you can easily cash out using PayPal or check in the mail.

But it also has its shortcomings. It is only available in select states and cities in the United States, and the gas stations, groceries, and restaurants it has affiliated with are lamentably few. Clearly, this app is not for everyone.
