What is TaskRabbit?

You've heard of Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Postmates. You probably drive for Uber right now or deliver groceries for Postmates. But the compensation you earn from these gigs is never nearly enough, so you're looking for another opportunity to supplement your income. You've heard of TaskRabbit from your friends, but is it worth your time?

But first, let's talk about what exactly TaskRabbit is.

TaskRabbit is a platform created to match ordinary consumers with gig workers. You can be a painter, a personal assistant, or a handyman, and you can join TaskRabbit as an independent contractor.

How does it work?

Clients will describe the tasks that they need to be done, as well as provide details, such as when and where the tasks need to be done. They can then choose the perfect independent contractor or "tasker" based on their skills and price. They can also base the assignment on the reviews written by past clients.

Once the job is done, clients will pay the "tasker" via TaskRabbit. They can then leave a positive or negative review on the app.

The TaskRabbit platform is available in major urban centers in the U.S., UK, Canada, Germany, and Spain. You can find TaskRabbit contractors in Los Angeles, London, Minneapolis, Dallas, and Detroit.

It can also be found in Albuquerque, Charleston, Des Moines, Honolulu, Nashville, Raleigh, and other major American cities.

Its international locations include Barcelona, Berlin, Edmonton, London, Manchester, Rhine-Ruhr, and Toronto.

Now that your interest is piqued, let's check out some of the tasks that you can offer via the TaskRabbit platform.

TaskRabbit is headquartered in San Francisco, California. It was an independent company back when it was just a startup, but it was bought by and became a subsidiary of IKEA in September 2017. IKEA's acquisition of TaskRabbit added a valuable service to its roster, which is furniture assembly.

Anyone -- whether clients or taskers -- can download the TaskRabbit app via the Play Store or the App Store.

Who Are The People Behind TaskRabbit?

TaskRabbit was founded by entrepreneur Leah Busque in 2008. It first began as RunMyErrand, and only changed its name to TaskRabbit in 2010.

As mentioned, TaskRabbit was acquired by IKEA in 2017. Its current CEO is Stacy Brown-Philpot, while Brian Leonard serves as its chief technology officer. Sarah Fried Rose is TaskRabbit's president and chief product officer.

How Does One Become A Tasker?

All you have to do to become a TaskRabbit tasker is to create an account online. You need to provide your full name, email address, mobile phone, and zip code to start the registration process.

TaskRabbit will send you additional instructions via email, so you need to check your inbox after the registration process. You will need to attend a Tasker onboarding session in your city. Once the onboarding process is done, you can now download the TaskRabbit Tasker app and accept jobs.

TaskRabbit Rates

So, how much can you potentially earn as a "tasker?"

Taskers charge by the hour. Hauling services providers, for example, have an average hourly rate of $47. You can earn $30 for furniture assembly, and $28 for IKEA furniture assembly.

Mounting and installation services have an average hourly rate of $38 while packing and unpacking services are available for $53. Want to work as one of the moving crew and do some heavy lifting? Then you can expect to earn as much as $41.

Keep in mind that these are just average hourly rates, and all taskers are free to set a higher or lower price depending on the job's level of difficulty, as well as the location.

Other Things You Need to Know About Being a Tasker

Keep in mind that TaskRabbit is not available in all city in the United States

TaskRabbit is only available in the country's major urban centers. You can check out TaskRabbit's website to see if your city is one of the places where you can work as a tasker. If you live in cities where TaskRabbit doesn't operate, I'm afraid you'll need to relocate or look for another opportunity to earn money.

There are certain requirements for taskers

You need to have a U.S. Social Security number and be at least 18 years old to become a tasker. Taskers should be a resident of one of the cities where TaskRabbit is active and need to provide the company with all the necessary personal information for background and ID check.

They need to have a checking account. This is a must as debit cards, prepaid cards, and savings accounts are not acceptable.

A credit card is also necessary as this is where TaskRabbit will charge the registration. Last but not least, they must own a smartphone with an iOS 9.0 or Android 4.3 or higher operating system. Windows phones are not accepted.

Taskers are subjected to background checks

As mentioned, all taskers will be subjected to background and ID checks for the safety of the clients. Some of the details that TaskRabbit will check to include your date of birth, address, and Social Security number. You will also be required to provide your checking account and routing numbers.

You need to pay a registration fee

All taskers are required to pay a one-time fee of $25. Keep in mind that this is non-refundable and you need to have a valid credit card for this. Paying this fee, however, doesn't guarantee that your application as a tasker will be approved.

What I Like About TaskRabbit

The variety of tasks available

One of the best things about TaskRabbit is the sheer number of tasks that are available for so-called taskers. If you've been feeling left out because all your tech-savvy friends have jobs or businesses online and you're stuck here helping your grandma assemble furniture or a friend pack and unpack, then TaskRabbit has something for you.

You can make money simply by using your skills in carpentry, home repairs, plumbing, or landscaping. You can even do mundane things (such as waiting in line, dropping off donations, organizing a room, and assembling an IKEA furniture) and get paid by the hour.

The flexibility and work-life balance it provides

The great thing about the gig economy is that it offers the flexibility and work-life balance you need. You can accept one or two tasks in the morning and be back in the afternoon to share some cookies and a glass of milk with your kid by afternoon.

If you're a student or a full-time worker who needs to supplement their income but don't want the job to interfere with your schedule, then TaskRabbit is the way to go.

What I Don't Like About TaskRabbit

Payment of $25 fee is not an assurance that you will be accepted as a tasker

According to the TaskRabbit FAQ page, you need to pay a $25 non-refundable fee for the background check. You will not be able to get this fee back even when TaskRabbit rejects your application. In my opinion, this is overpriced, and the rule that you can't get it back even when you're rejected borders on scammy.

No job security and benefits

The gig economy has been a boon for many people. Moms can now work from home while the baby is napping. Students can sign up as an Uber driver or as a DoorDash worker to earn a little cash to buy textbooks and a cup of coffee. You can earn money in your own time without sacrificing work-life balance!

But the bitter truth about the gig economy is workers do not have job security and benefits their counterparts in traditional workplaces. Forget about health insurance or sick leaves or any of that. You're on your own here, and you need to plan accordingly.

Inconsistent metrics

Many TaskRabbit contractors have complained that the metrics are unpredictable and inconsistent. Clients also do not outline the tasks or their expectations clearly, leaving taskers unable to meet them adequately. Check out some examples below.

Poor customer (tasker) service

Another complaint taskers have with TaskRabbit is its poor customer service. Taskers often get a canned response when they complain about the app or the delayed payment. There have also been reports that customer service all too often sides with clients even when they are wrong or are abusive. Apparently, TaskRabbit knows which side its bread is buttered.

Is TaskRabbit a Scam?

No, TaskRabbit is not a scam. It is a legit platform for workers who want to earn some extra cash or are looking for a new way to make money using their skills.

But as is normal with the gig economy, taskers are not afforded the usual benefits and protection provided to workers in traditional workplaces. TaskRabbit's has complained that its metrics constantly change, and some clients' expectations are unrealistic or they are outright abusive. It has a non-refundable $25 fee, and it may not be available in your city.

Is it worth your time? Maybe, if TaskRabbit is available in your area, if you value flexibility, and you don't mind the lack of protection for workers like you.
