Tobin Smith is back to selling stock picks and recently launched a newsletter called Transformity Investor.
This is a big-picture newsletter that focuses on trends and finding the next big thing.
Is this a legitimate stock-picking service or another investing scam?
We'll get to the bottom of this question in this review.
We'll delve into this offer and look at all the good points and any red flags I can find.
I'll even be revealing some stock picks as well!
Let's get started!
Transformity Investor Summary
Creator: Tobin Smith
Price to join: $97 per year
Do I recommend? Not really

Overall rating: To be determined
Transformtiy Investor is a lot like other investing newsletters that are already out there.
You get a new stock pick every month, and the focus is on trends and emerging sectors.
Like I said, this same newsletter is already being sold in 100 different places.
Tobin Smith has some red flags about him.
He used to sell stock picks over a decade ago and then moved over to Fox Business.
Apparently, Tobin was getting paid to promote certain stocks and was eventually fired for doing so.
So I don't know if this is someone I would trust to get investing advice from.
Overall, it's too early to judge this newsletter, but I'm not overly excited about it.

The Return Of Tobin Smith

Tobin Smith has been in the industry for quite some time.
Formerly, he ran a stock-picking service called Changewave that was in business nearly 20 years ago.
According to him, Steve Jobs said Changewave was the best at understanding the significance of the iPod and iPhone.
But Smith had a sort of fall from grace over the last decade.
He eventually left Changewave to be a host on Fox Business and ran into some controversy there.

Apparently he was being paid to promote stocks which went against his contract at Fox Business.
This wasn't the only time he got in trouble for stock promotion.
He was fined $258,000 by the SEC for fraudulently promoting a penny stock to investors:

So there are definitely red flags in Tobin's past.
Would he be dumb enough to be promoting stocks again?
I have no clue since I don't know him personally.
But he's shown he's capable of misleading investors and his audience for money.
And that's not a good thing.
Revealing Some Stocks
There's one main way stock pickers promote their newsletters, and that's to put out stock teasers.
These stock teasers promote the idea of a stock that'll get massive returns and withhold the name of the company being promoted unless you pay for the newsletter.
This is how Tobin is trying to get people to buy Transformity Investor.
The good news is that Tobin left enough clues in his main promotion, which hypes up "the best stock to own for the A.I. revolution," to figure out the stocks.
Here's each one with a description of the stock:
Verses AI
This is the company that Tobin claims is "the stock to own for A.I. Revolution."
Verses A.I. is a penny stock and is going to be pretty risky because of that.
They are apparently a cognitive computing company that specializes in next-generation AI.
According to what I've found, they're the "world's first network operating system for distributed intelligence."
However, they don't make money at the moment and don't have any real products.
It's definitely a gamble.
Devon Energy
In the same stock teaser, Tobin promotes stocks that don't have anything to do with AI.
Devon Energy is a stock that Tobin claims will benefit from the push to bring production back to America and away from globalization.
Devon Energy is considered a good buy by most experts, and they are a natural gas company that operates in America.
Stock pickers are big on natural gas at the moment because it burns cleaner and because of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The idea is that America will produce the natural gas Europe is losing to Russia.
Although that's going to take many years to accomplish since it's very costly to build the pipelines, refineries, and transport chips to do that,
Plug Power
The last stock that Tobin is pushing is Plug Power.
Plug Power makes hydrogen cells that are used as a clean energy source.
You see a lot of forklifts and warehouse vehicles using hydrogen now.
Additionally, the hydrogen car market is growing as well.
So if you're bullish on hydrogen, this is the stock to own.

How Does Transformity Investor Work?
This newsletter works just like every other newsletter.
There are two main things that you're paying for.
The first is getting a new stock pick and new stock research every month in the newsletter.
Tobin claims that he can identify emerging trends and find "the next big thing."
So the stock picks will be on things like A.I., self-driving cars, natural gas, and things like that.
There are many newsletters out there that claim to do the same thing.
The second major thing that you're paying for is the model portfolio.
When you sign up, you'll see all the stocks that Tobin is currently recommending.
You already know three of the stocks in the portfolio, which are Verses AI, Devon Energy, and Plug Power.

Transformity Investor FAQ's
Still have questions about Transformity Investor?
Here are the answers to any remaining questions you might have:
1) How much does Transformity Investor cost?
The newsletter is affordable at only $97 per year.
However, keep in mind that when an investing newsletter is priced this way, it's because they want to upsell you more expensive products after you buy.
The publisher for this newsletter is True Market Insiders, and there are a lot of newsletters at this publisher, some of which cost thousands of dollars per year.
Expect aggressive marketing to try to get you to buy these newsletters.
2) What is the investing strategy?
The investing strategy is to pick stocks that are in hot trends.
So let's say Tobin expects more natural gas production in America because of their tensions with Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Tobin would pick American companies that he expects to benefit from this, which is what he did with Devon Energy.
Tobin also expects hydrogen to play an important role in the clean energy shift America is making.
That's why he's picking Plug Power.
This is a legit investing strategy, but it can be hard to correctly guess which trends are for real and which will fizzle.
Plug Power has been a favorite of stock pickers for over a decade because of its connections to hydrogen.
But the company and hydrogen never seem to really get going.
And because of that, the stock has been very volatile.

So expect a bumpy ride with some of these stock picks.
3) Is Tobin Smith legit?
I mean, he's been in the investing world for a while and was big enough to have his own show on Fox Business.
However, he has his controversies and has been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars by the SEC for misleading investors about a stock.
That's not really something you want to see with a stock picker.
Additionally, he lost his job at Fox Business for taking payments to promote a stock.
So it's not like it was a one-time deal.
I don't know if he'd do this now, but it's something to consider.
4) Are there similar newsletters?
Yes, there's many newsletters just like this one.
Some include:
- The Distortion Report
- Stansberry Investment Advisory
- TradeStops
- Retirement Watch
- Intelligent Income Investor
- True Wealth
- The Opportunistic Trader
- Jeff Clark Trader
- Behind The Markets
- The Oxford Income Letter
- Power Gauge Report
- Chaikin Analytics
- Innovation Investor
As you can see there's no shortage of people wanting to sell you stock picks.

Wrappings Things Up
So that's the end of my review of Transformity Investor.
The stock-picking industry is absolutely massive and brings in billions in revenue.
You're starting to see more and more ex-Wall Street types and hedge fund owners move into this space.
That's what Tobin is doing.
Do I think Transformity Investor is anything special or unique compared to what's already out there?
No.
But I get what Tobin is doing. He wants to get a slice of the pie, and I'm sure he'll get a nice little slice for himself.
I personally would really recommend buying, especially with Tobin's past.
He's shown a willingness to promote stocks he doesn't really believe in.
And many of the stocks he recommends will be very volatile and risky.
He even recommends penny stocks, which I'd personally avoid.
The good news is that there are investing newsletters that are worth subscribing to.
